D E S C R I P T I O N
Our acrylic hex signs are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The traditional primary colors are a great contrast to the white acrylic substrate. After we laser engrave the design on the acrylic we hand-paint the hex using outdoor acrylic and then clear coat the painted area for extra weather-protection. We offer multiple sizes with or without custom text around the perimeter.
Hex signs are a form of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, related to fraktur, found in the Fancy Dutch tradition. Being in the midst of PA Dutch country we see hex signs on homes, businesses and barns. Many folks attach meanings to the symbols and colors in the signs. We do include this information, but I see the hexes as purely decorative, or "Chust for nice" as in the local dialect. Almost all of the hex signs represent Luck, Goodwill and/or Happiness. Interestingly Hex signs are a Pennsylvania Dutch custom, not to be confused with the Amish who did not adopt the custom of decorating their barns and do not use hex signs to this day. We have PA Dutch in our blood and grew up with our Grandma and Mom speaking Dutch whenever they did not want us kids to know what they were saying. Even to this day Dutch phrases, such as snicklefritz, nix-nux, rutching around and Gott Im Himmel were directed to our children and now to our grandchildren! My kids even learned Dutch in pre-school and we can all sing Happy Birthday in Dutch!
