D E S C R I P T I O N
Our premium hardwood hex signs are are a beautiful way to celebrate your PA Dutch culture. I modified traditional designs to highlight the laser-engraving for both all natural brown and for colorful hand-painted. Each hex is clear-coated with several coats of polyurethane to protect both the wood and the engraving, as well as enhance their beauty. I recommend displaying your wood hex sign inside, but it can be displayed outdoors in a sheltered place, such as a covered porch.
Hex signs are a form of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, related to fraktur, found in the Fancy Dutch tradition. Being in the midst of PA Dutch country we see hex signs on homes, businesses and barns. Many folks attach meanings to the symbols and colors in the signs. We do include this information, but I see the hexes as purely decorative, or "Chust for nice" as in the local dialect. Almost all of the hex signs represent Luck, Goodwill and/or Happiness. Interestingly Hex signs are a Pennsylvania Dutch custom, not to be confused with the Amish who did not adopt the custom of decorating their barns and do not use hex signs to this day. We have PA Dutch in our blood and grew up with our Grandma and Mom speaking Dutch whenever they did not want us kids to know what they were saying. Even to this day Dutch phrases, such as snicklefritz, nix-nux, rutching around and Gott Im Himmel were directed to our children and now to our grandchildren! My kids even learned Dutch in pre-school and we can all sing Happy Birthday in Dutch!
